Before you make the cut...

Bangs have lots of benefits—they can enhance your features, hide forehead wrinkles and add instant excitement to any cut—but there are things you need to know before falling for fringe

  1. Bangs need to be trimmed on a regular basis. Once they get a tad too long, they'll throw off your entire look. Fortunately, most stylists will do a bang trim for free—call in advance to be sure
  2. They need to be styled with care—after all, they're the first thing people notice about your hair. Tackle your bangs before you work on other areas and be sure you apply a heat protectant when blow-drying
  3. If you have a front cowlick, inform your stylist so he or she can work around it, or your bangs will never look quite right.
  4. Pick bangs that complement your face shape. If it's round, try assymmetrical or wispy bangs, which divert the eye from full cheeks. If it's heart-shaped, opt for angled or blunt bangs to cover your high forehead and draw attention away from a narrow chin. A A long face is flattered by long, blunt bangs, while wispy, angled bangs soften a square face's strong lines and make it look longer
