Pony up: Spice up your casual ponytail with one of these seven hot styles

As the little black dress of the hair world, the ponytail never goes out of style. But this year the classic go-to is getting several stylish makeovers.

The ponytail has become the new updo. From the red carpet to editorial or business meetings, the pony has taken on a new meaning and multiple style vairations. The ponytail has been a classic turn-to style that is no longer just a bad hair day fix. Today, we are creating various styles from sleek-and-smooth to that hint of sexy-messy.

Celebs like Kate Hudson, Sandra Bullock, Olivia Wilde, Katy Perry, Lauren Conrad and Beyonce have helped rock ponies into a bonafide trend. Jennifer Lopez is another celebrity that always rocks killer ponytails of all styles— high, low, dressy. She is the queen of the ponytail.

The messy ponytail has always been considered casual but now we are seeing them nicely slicked back, making the 'do very elegant. According to Janelle Saenz, a stylist at From Head 2 Toez Salon in Huntington Beach, CA, "Now we know how to make an easy updo look great by taking the time to slick it back with gel or hairspray and making it really shiny with product and showing off the face more."

No doubt about it, ponytails are forever in. Now all you need are a few pointers from our experts to create some of these hot pony styles for a runway ready look

#1: Sleek and Smooth Ponytail

Sleek and Smooth Ponytail

Completely straighten your hair with a flat iron. Apply a small amount of hair oil to the surface. Brush and gather all the hair into a ponytail. Make sure to keep brushing as you gather the hair. Secure the pony with a coated band. Finish by running your flat iron over the ponytail to make sure all the hair is sleek and smooth

#2: High-top Ponytail

Lightly spray all of your hair with a light hold hairspray and then brush out. Start gathering and brushing all the hair to the top of the head and secure with a coated band. Spray extra hairspray if necessary to keep the hair secure and in place. Take a small section from the underside of the pony and wrap it around the band to hide it. If your hair is curly or wavy allow your natural texture to shine through

#3: Messy Ponytail

On dry hair, straighten or allow your natural texture to take over. Hand-comb your hair and allow uneven ridges and texture to form as you secure the ponytail with coated band. Use a tail comb to lift hair at the top. To finish, use a medium-hold hairspray or flexible paste to scrunch additional texture into the pony

#4: Braided Ponytail

Braided Ponytail

On dry hair, you can straighten or work with your natural texture. You can braid the hair first into various styles then secure into a pony or you can pull the hair into a pony and finish the ends with your favorite braid. Another option is to make small braids on the sides and then add them to the ponytail for a more boho look

#5: Faux Long Ponytail

Faux Long Ponytail

Prep hair with the Number 4 Super Comb Prep & Protect and comb through. Cocktail the Number 4 Blow Dry Lotion and Support Solution together for control and shine. Sectioning at ear level, place a ponytail. This can be done loose or tight, depending on the desired style. Place another ponytail at base of the ear. Place a third pony beneath the second. Add Number 4 Thermal Styling Spray to ponies and blow dry to give them extra style and a bump in texture. "This style will create an illusion of a long pony.

#6: Stacked Ponytail

Stacked Ponytail

This is a similar style to the faux long pony. Starting with a section right above the ears, spray Number 4's Non Aerosol Hair Spray at the base of the hair. Using a smoothing brush, comb the hair back into a ponytail and secure it with a band. At mid-ear, while spraying Non Aerosol at the base, smooth the hair into a second pony that includes hair from the first. Moving to the last section and spraying Non Aerosol at the base, secure the last ponytail at the nape of the neck. Smooth down any flyways with Number 4's Texture Styling Creme. To add shine to the pony, add Number 4's Fluoro5 Elixer Restore & Repair Oil from midshaft to ends

#7: The Center Part Ponytail

The Center Part Ponytail

This look can help elongate a rounder face or give a more dramatic look from the everyday. For a sleek look, start with damp hair and apply a mixture of Number 4 Firm Hold Gel and Blow Dry Lotion. Using a smoothing brush, smooth hair down from the center part into a low ponytail. You can wrap hair around the band to hide it. For a round, soft look, apply the Number 4 Styling Foam through the base and midshaft. Blow-dry the hair smooth or tousled. Loosely tie it into a low pony. You can leave the pony smooth by spraying Number 4 Thermal Styling Spray and flat ironing the hair in small sections. For bounce in the pony, curl it with a large curling iron.
